As my summer internship slowly comes to an end, many of my coworkers have started coming up to my desk and asking me about Italy, such as if I’m excited (obviously I’m excited…I’m going to Italy…) and where else I plan to go (everywhere); however, today marked the first day that I got the dreaded, “Have you started packing?” question. All summer I’ve just said to people, “Oh yeah I leave at the end of August,” failing to make the connection that August 31st was getting closer and closer each time I said that. Today is August 5…which means I leave in 26 days…which means my answer to that question is “hell no.” Despite being able to answer that question with such confidence, my coworker managed to plant a frightening little question in my mind, and that question is…
HOW THE HELL DO YOU PACK FOR FOUR MONTHS?!
Sure I’ve been on long(ish) vacations before but I think the longest I’ve ever had to pack for is about 8 days, and now I have to pack for 4 months?! To some this may seem like a walk in the park; however, I’m forgetting a minor detail to this dilemma…I am the queen of over packing. It’s actually quite a talent of mine. I am so good at over packing that when I went to Punta Cana for 5 days I could have easily stayed there for another week or so because I had barely touched ¾ of the clothes in my suitcase. Impressive, right?
Anyway, back to Italy…I looked at the weight requirements for my airline the other day, thinking to myself, “OK so the weight limits have to be higher for international flights, I mean, they just have to be.” Much to my chagrin, they are not. How the heck am I supposed to pack enough S%@& for four months and keep it under 50 pounds? I understand that I don’t actually need to pack “four months’ worth of stuff,” but even if I pack half as much as what I use in four months, how do I keep that under 50 pounds?!
Seeing as my response to my coworkers question was “hell no,” I won’t be finding out the answer to my own question for at least another week or so (that’s why they call it “last minute,” right?). I’ll be sure to let you all know if my trip to Italy helps or hurts my future success as a professional over packer. Stay tuned.
